We’ve not updated our blog here regarding trout and salmon fishing because, frankly, there’s been very little to report.

However, things are looking up on the St. Joseph River, as more salmonids have moved upstream. We’re getting decent reports of steelhead and coho being caught around the Twin Branch dam in Indiana and at Niles and Berrien Springs in Michigan.

But here’s the thing…the big push of Skamania steelhead has yet to materialize, although biologists are optimistic it’s coming.

The big problem has been low water conditions and not enough flow/current to lure the big fish upstream. Many experts believe there’s still a lot of fish in Lake Michigan and we’ll see a good run before the end of the month. The Michigan run steelhead will be right behind them, so the late fall/winter fishing should be pretty good.

Deer hunting: Man, the bow season should be picking up since farmers have really been clearing their fields. However, the EHD thing is spreading like a forest fire and it’s really putting the hurt in some pockets of Michiana.

In Indiana, biologists says it’s showed up around Warsaw, Bristol and Plymouth, but the worst seems to be in LaGrange and Steuben counties.

The hardest hit on Michigan counties appears to be along the Cass and St. Joseph county line in southern Michigan. Branch County is taking it on the chin as well.

Let’s hope the forthcoming cold weather will bring a hard frost and kill off those little bugs carrying the EHD virus.
