Fishing opportunities over New Year’s holiday are limited until better ice comes on, but there are places where you wet a line.

A random check of Michiana waters today revealed that some ponds and small lakes are frozen over, but none is safe or fully frozen – yet.

Some lake channels are ice-covered and there may be some people trying to venture onto them this weekend, but it’s not recommended. Conditions should improve in the coming days.

Dick Parker of Central Park Bait in Mishawaka said that some guys were getting onto Maxinkuckee channels.

“I heard there was an inch and half and someone has already fallen through,” said Parker.

If you have a boat and feel like chasing walleyes, we’re hearing of some good action on the river at Berrien Springs, Mich., although it’s a safe bet that walleyes are biting elsewhere on the St. Joseph as well.

Bryan Williams of Trailhead Mercantile in Niles said some 25-inch-plus walleyes have been caught at Berrien. Lead head jigs, tipped with twister tail plastics and minnows, have been the best baits.

There are still some steelhead wintering in the St. Joe, but very few people have been going after ‘em, Parker noted.
